Indoor tanning isn’t identical to the sun, but it can be equivalent for what matters biologically: it delivers UV in a controlled, repeatable dose, and UVB-emitting devices trigger the same skin vitamin D pathway as sunlight. Randomized studies show sunbed exposure raises serum 25(OH)D, and regular UVB sunbed use is associated with higher vitamin D status. The difference is not ‘real vs fake sun,’ it’s that indoors you can control time and dose far more consistently than the outdoors.
- Randomized controlled trial: UVB-emitting sunbeds increase serum vitamin D, dose-dependently.
- Clinical trial: standardized, guideline-based sunbed schedules with adequate UVB raise 25(OH)D into physiological ranges, showing “sun-like” vitamin D outcomes under controlled dosing.
- Winter supplementation framing: repeated moderate sunbed exposures raised 25(OH)D from typical winter values to typical summer values.
- Observed “sun-equivalent” benefit pattern: regular tanning bed users had substantially higher 25(OH)D levels than non-users, with higher hip BMD reported in the same study.
- Spectral equivalence point (vitamin D band): measured sunbed spectra were reported as similar to sunlight in the UVB range (the vitamin D relevant band), supporting “same mechanism” language.
- Direct sun-vs-sunbed comparison study design: researchers measured spectra from 52 indoor tanning devices and compared them against surface solar irradiance conditions.
- Dose-comparison argument: a modeled 2-week outdoor sunbathing vacation (even when avoiding sunburn with sunscreen) can yield higher cumulative UV exposure than a typical 10-session sunbed course, supporting the “more controlled dose” point.
