The Ultimate Guide to Prepping, Setting & Maintaining Your Spray Tan

Follow this step-by-step guide to prep, set, and maintain your tan for a long-lasting, streak-free glow.

1. Prepping for Your Spray Tan
Preparation is key! A smooth, hydrated base helps your tan absorb evenly and last longer.
✅ Exfoliate 
24 hours before your session, use our amazing exfoliating scrub or primer/remover. Pay extra attention to dry areas like knees, elbows, and ankles. We sell all your prep needs! Important to do this ahead of time, as too fresh of skin can create uneven patches. Absolutely do not use Bath & Body Works, TreeHut, Walmart, Sallys, Olay, Dove, etc. These contain oils and soap residues that repel your spray tans and will leave it uneven and blotchy.

✅ Shave or Wax in Advance
 – If you wax, do so at least 24 hours before your spray tan. Shaving should be done at least 12 hours before to avoid irritation and spots of skin that will absorb unevenly. Avoid using a razor that has a moisture/soap bar on it, these also contain products that spray tans react badly with. We sell an in shower lotion/shave cream you should  use!

✅ No Lotions, Oils, or Deodorant 
Come to your appointment with clean, dry skin. Any residue from skincare products can create barriers that cause uneven application. This includes perfume, essential oils and moisturizers. The only exception is on your hands as they are usually so dry they absorb the spray too much and can look dirty.

✅ Wear Loose, Dark Clothing 
Tight clothing can rub off your fresh tan, leading to streaks. Opt for flowy garments and avoid tight bras, socks, or leggings.


2. Setting Your Spray Tan
The first few hours after your spray tan are crucial for developing an even, natural-looking glow.

⏳ Wait Before Showering 
Follow the suggested development time. Rapid tans can be rinsed off in 1 hour for light development, 2 hours for medium, and 3 hours for full development, while our clear solution needs 6-8 hours for light development, 16 for medium and up to 24 hours before your first rinse. Please be aware-- keeping the solution on longer does not help your tan, actually can tint you orange! The instant spray will still take a day to develop after rinse off, you just don't have to keep it on as long. 

🚫 Avoid Sweating & Water 
No workouts, showers, or moisture until your first rinse. Water can cause streaking!

🛁 First Shower: Only Rinse 
Your first rinse should be cool lukewarm water only—no soaps, scrubs, shampooing or shaving. The cosmetic bronzer will wash away if you got a rapid tan. Your full color will show in 24 hours if you got a rapid, clear will be the color you see.

🤍 Pat Dry, Don’t Rub 
After your rinse, gently pat your skin dry with a soft towel instead of rubbing to prevent exfoliation.

3. Maintaining Your Spray Tan

To keep your glow looking fresh and natural for 3-7 days, follow these essential tips:
💧 Hydrate Daily – Apply any of our tan-friendly moisturizers (avoid lotions with alcohol, fragrances, or mineral oils--you're not going to have a good tan with over the counter, bath and body works, tik tok, etc products). Hydrated skin keeps your tan from fading unevenly.

🚿 Use Gentle, Sulfate-Free Soaps 
Harsh body washes with sulfates strip your tan. Stick to mild, hydrating cleansers. Our line of body washes are designed specifically to help keep your tan even as well as prepare your skin for your next spray!

🪒 Shave Gently 
Use a sharp razor and light pressure to avoid removing your tan prematurely!
🌊 Avoid Long Baths & Chlorine 
Hot tubs, long showers, and pools can fade your tan faster.

✨ Use a Tan Extender 

A gradual tanning lotion like our Glocation or Sunkissed Sweet Tea moisturizer can help refresh your color as it fades.

📅 Routine 
To maintain a continuous glow, schedule your spray tans every 7-10 days and follow this prep & care routine each time. If you spray more frequently than that it is important to take an "off" week to let solution fade off. 

During your spray, take off all Jewelry. Make sure to use barrier cream on hands. Follow all in room instructions and when done, wash hands!
